Ferrari hybrid heads to Geneva

Ferrari will show its first hybrid production car this March at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. The high-end hybrid specimen will be a gas-electric version of the carmaker’s eye-popping 599 GTB. It will also be the world’s first ready-for-market exotic hybrid.

The exact specs will not be known until the car is unveiled, but it will most likely unite a lithium ion battery pack with a pair of electric motors fixed at the rear axle, along with Ferrari’s outlandishly powerful 600-plus horsepower V12 engine.

Ask what EVs can do for the smart grid

It was barely a year ago that electric vehicles (EVs) were largely relegated to the novelty category by most in the utility industry. Now, one finds EVs prominently covered in virtually every utility smart grid conference program, and some utilities are even considering the launch of new EV charging businesses. In over 20 years of utility industry involvement, I have never seen utilities go through such a rapid shift in thinking.

Many factors contributed to the shift in utility perspectives toward EVs, but the turning point arguably would be the announcement of billions of dollars of federal stimulus funding to support alternative fuel vehicle programs in the U.S. and elsewhere. This has propelled auto manufacturers to announce planned production of at least 60 xEV (EV, PHEV, HEV) passenger and light duty plug-in vehicles by 2010, and at least 119 models of xEV passenger vehicles by 2015 (1). What does the arrival of all of these EVs mean for utilities?

20 battery startups hitting the road with lithium-ion

li-ion EV battery packWhen we first put out our list of 13 startups working on lithium-ion batteries for vehicles, the market was waiting for billions of stimulus dollars for advanced batteries to be doled out, and hoping to gear up for its biggest ever plug-in vehicle push in 2010. That was a half a year ago, and subsequent DOE funds and major supply deals have made winners and losers out of contenders.

One of the startups on our original list — A123Systems — went on to have the biggest public offering of 2009 (now that it’s publicly traded, we’re still tracking ‘em but cut the company from our startup watch list). At the other end of the spectrum, a once promising company called Imara called it quits after being unable to raise new financing. So uh, they won’t be hitting the road any time soon.

Here’s our updated list, now with 20 battery startups (working on battery cells, materials, management systems and other tech) you should know about:

The run on lithium

Car manufacturers rush to close deals with lithium suppliers and to secure access to a resource that is as common as lead or nickel. The supply chain of lithium is fragile due to unreliable lithium miners and suppliers.

Global automakers and battery makers need to ensure a steady supply of lithium to power the expected electric-car revolution. Sources for the mineral are well spotted in Chile, Bolivia, Argentina, Australia and China and not scarce, however, few are reliable miners and suppliers. The currently biggest producers of Lithium are Chile’s SQM, the German Chemetall, a division of U.S. Rockwood Holdings Inc., and U.S. FMC Corp.. However, the political stability of at least the first two supplier countries is less than stable.

Batteries make EVs go … but it’s not as simple as it seems

plug-inThere’s no way around it: Electric vehicles are coming. It’s just that what makes them go — batteries — are the rabbit in a horse race. It looks like lithium-ion has a long lead on the other technologies, but it’s a confusing and controversial race.

Global management consulting firm PRTM notes that cutting the cost of lithium-ion battery production “has been broadly discussed as the key enabler for electric vehicles (EVs) to become viable as mass market vehicles in the coming years. It is widely expected that battery costs will need to come down by more than 50% before the total cost of ownership of EVs will approach that of an internal combustion engine.”
